Junior Learn To Sail

Our Learn to Sail (LTS) programme is a fun and supportive introduction to sailing for children aged 9–13 years. It’s the perfect place for young sailors to learn the basics, build confidence and discover the enjoyment of being out on the water.

Sailing takes place in Optimist dinghies provided by Waiuku Yacht Club, giving beginners the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of sailing in a safe, encouraging and fun environment. Alongside sailing skills, participants learn important water safety, while developing confidence, self-reliance, problem-solving skills and the ability to challenge themselves.

As sailors grow and develop, the club has a range of yachts available for children who have outgrown the Optimist class (approximately 55kg). Where conditions allow, sailors can also progress to sailing in pairs, continuing to develop their skills and confidence in a different style of boat.

The Learn to Sail course runs over weekends throughout November and December. Once sailors complete the programme, they are encouraged to keep sailing throughout the season, making the most of the skills they have learned and becoming part of our wider sailing community.

A highlight of the season is our annual Sail & Camp at Clarks Beach in February – a great opportunity for young sailors to put their skills into practice, enjoy time on the water and make new friends.
